Feng Shui Advice: Mirrors in Your Bedroom - Is This Bad Feng Shui?

Mirrors are a Feng Shui chi enhancement because this object can activate and circulate chi throughout your home. A well placed mirror can bring light into a dark area, reflect something beautiful, visually enlarge a small space, and provide s sense of safety. Since mirrors activate chi, their placement is always a good idea in your home office, kitchen, living room, or family room.

Mirrors and Feng Shui Blog by Kates Home Staging and Redesign

Your bedroom is a place for relaxation and reflection. Mirrors can activate energy in your bedroom, which can influence your sleep. The larger the mirror is, the more it will negatively influence your sleep.  Closet doors with mirrors are considered a problem and should be covered with a curtain that can be closed at night and opened during the day.  Another option for the mirrored closet doors would be to replace them with a wooden door.

Mirrors on top of dressers are another problem in bedrooms.  A simple solution would be to drape these mirrors with fabric during the night to ensure your sleep is not disturbed.  According to Western Feng Shui, the only time a small mirror is permitted in the bedroom is when the door cannot be seen from the bed. All other mirrors should be avoided in the bedroom.

When selecting a mirror (for your living room, kitchen, bathroom) it is important to ensure the mirror will reflect entire images.  For example, if you have a dressing mirror that chops your head it could affect how you feel about yourself negatively.  Also, it is best to avoid mirrors that are broken up with decorative bevels.  Mirrors should never be placed directly across from each other, this creates an endless reflection which can be very confusing.

So, if you are having trouble sleeping in your bedroom perhaps it is the active chi in your mirrors keeping you up at night. Covering your bedroom mirrors with fabric for a few nights may be worth trying to see how much better you are able to sleep.

Kate, I thought mirrors in the bedroom were bad feng shui. I used to have mirrors on the closet doors in my bedroom before we remodeled. It was literally a wall of mirrors. We removed those and built a walk-in closet. I think the space is much more comfortable now, but maybe I just love the larger closet! Love your feng shui posts!

Cathy ~ You are right, Feng Shui usually recommends againt mirrors in the bedroom. But so many people have them in their bedroom, it is really tough to eliminate them all together.  Your larger closet sounds fantastic ;-) Kate

I can't stand those unattractive closet door mirrors -- Now I know there's more reason than ever not to have them ... good info.

I had never heard this before.  My wife has a lot of trouble sleeping nights so it is at least worth a try getting rid of the mirror on the door in our room.  Sounds like getting a new waterbed with a mirrored canopy is out of the question, LOL

From the desk of David Dee,

Kate, my in-laws had mirrors in their bedrooms. I had mentioned to them that it was not a good thing and so they ended up replacing them with the wooden ones. The other problem was that one of the mirror door was cracked which is a bad sign.

Kate--I found you via Carole P.

Very interesting post.  I have read this suggestion about mirrors several times and wonder why furniture manufacturers make dressers with mirrors?

Kate:

I had no idea about this.  Of course, all bedroom sets come with mirrors on the dressers. Perhaps this is interfering with a good night's sleep.

I do have trouble sleeping, and we have a huge mirror over our dresser.  I don't use it, but I'm not sure my husband will go for taking it down......yet.  I'll try covering it at night and see if it makes a difference in my sleep patterns.

Great post Kate.... thanks for the reminder.......  LOL When I was reading Ann Allen's message "we have a huge mirror over" I just knew she was goint to say the bed....... whew, the dresser!!!   It really does make a big difference not having a mirror in the bedroom, I will test to that!

Kate, after being a fan of Carole P's for a while, she pointed me to your blog as well. I love to learn about Feng Shui, and will subscribe to you also.

I had heard this about mirrors in the bedroom. Guess that's why those mirror closet doors went out of style.  Even those low dressers with the mirrors are not so much in vogue anymore. I have an armoire that has mirrors on the inside of the doors, and everytime I see them open at night I have to get up and close them. Now I know why!

Great blog!

I got rid of bedroom mirrors a long time ago... just can't bear to part with the TV although I know that's a problem too.

Hi Kate - great post.  Some condos in Southeast Florida circa 1980 still have mirrors everywhere....even if they are pitted, people cant seem to part with them and change.  It is the visionaries who buy these antiquated apartments for a steal who also bring balance and harmony to the complex.

I also hear you should be covering your television with a sheet toimprove the energy in the bedroom

Kate,

Since I mentioned to my husband two years ago how bad mirrors are in a bedroom, we haven't missed it and sleep better, too.

As I know it is not good if mirror refects you bed. Also antique mirrors could hold some unwanted history...

Thanks for sharing, Kate!

I hate the mirrored closet doors, now I have a better reason to recommend replacing them.
